Following a football strike in 1949 in Argentina, Di Stéfano went to play for Millonarios of Bogota in Colombia. He spent six years in Argentina and Colombia, scoring 149 goals during that time, before signing with Real Madrid in 1953. That is where his iconic status was truly built. Di Stéfano led the Spanish club side to eight league titles in his 11 seasons there, along with five consecutive European Champions Cups having scored in the final in all five. Di Stéfano won the Ballon d’Or in 1957 and 1959, and is the only player ever awarded the Super Ballon d’Or in 1989.
Among the historical artifacts up for auction are medals, trophies, match worn jerseys and boots, awards and other personal property. Highlighting the auction are Di Stéfano's five European Champions Cup Gold Medals, all five trophies presented to him for winning those European Champions Cups, and all three of his Ballon d’Or Awards, the two he won as a player his Super Ballon d’Or he was awarded for his contributions to the game beyond the pitch. Di Stéfano's iconic white number nine jersey worn during the 1950’s also finds it way to the auction block, as well as his Spanish National team red number nine jersey.
Former UEFA President Michel Platini called Di Stéfano “a great amongst the greats,” meanwhile, another footballer legend Eusebio da Silva Ferreira suggested Di Stefano was “the most complete footballer in the history of the game.”
