Biography of Anoush Dastgir, an Afghan-Dutch former footballer and current football coach. From July 2018 to July 2022, he was the national coach of Afghanistan.
Dastgir came to the Netherlands at a young age and started playing football at GVV '57 from Grave, where he stayed in an asylum seekers' centre. He came to Groesbeek and went through the youth academy of N.E.C. and VVV Venlo. He made his debut at VVV-Venlo in friendly games.
Dastgir played a total of six matches for the Afghanistan national football team in 2015 and 2016. On September 5, 2015, he made his debut as a starting player in a friendly match against Lebanon (2-0) defeat. He was substituted for Saber Azizi after 89 minutes. With Afghanistan he took part in the 2015 South Asian Football Championship where the team lost the final to India after extra time.
When the Afghan Football Association fired national coach Petar Šegrt, Dastgir was appointed ad-interim national coach for the friendly match against Tajikistan (1-0 defeat) on November 13, 2016 on the initiative of the player group. From March 2017 he became an assistant to the new national coach Otto Pfister and stopped playing football.
In July 2018, Dastgir signed a two-year contract as Afghanistan national coach. He succeeded Otto Pfister and combines this with his work for the N.E.C. amateurs. As of August 2018, he is the national coach of the Afghanistan national football team. Dastgir led the Afghanistan national football team in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asia Cup. In April 2020, Dastgir extended his contract with the Afghanistan Football Federation for 1 year.
After missing out on qualifying for the 2023 Asian Football Championship, Dastgir stepped down as national coach of Afghanistan.
