Description |
This is not the first book of football statistics and lists which has ever been written. Far from it. But it does provide a huge variety of interesting information regarding the history of English club football, much of which has never been published before. Indeed, most of the information found in this book can’t be found (certainly not easily) even on the internet. Try and google the answers to the following questions, and you will probably struggle:
•Which club was top of the league on the day you were born?
•When was the last time a team won the title despite losing at home to a team that was relegated?
•Which nine title races went down to a single goal on the final day of the season?
•Which club won the biggest majority of its league points in a single season away from home?
•Which league venue gave its fans the fewest number of goals in a season – just 24 in 21 games?
•In terms of average league position, when was your club’s most successful decade?
•Who is the only manager to win major trophies with three different English clubs?
•Which was the first club to achieve top 4 finishes in four major trophies in the same season?
•Which is the only League club currently based in a Liberal Democrat-held constituency?
•In which years did the FA Cup and League Cup produce its strongest and weakest semi-final line ups?
•Which club has competed in eight penalty shoot-outs in major competitions, and won them all?
All the answers, however, are to be found within the pages of this meticulously researched book, together with a few more well-known facts and stats. And yes, unlike much of the other information you will find written about English football, the facts in this book refer not just to the period since 1992, but to the 121 years before that as well.
All information is up-to-date for the start of the 2021-22 season.
