Gigi Mele who in 1960, after having raced for the strong and historic UCAT (Unione Ciclo Alpina Torino), after having beaten his friend Balmamion in the sprint at his home, in the classic Coppa Città di Cuorgné, moved up to the professionals. There are about thirty victories in the years approaching professionalism for Gigi Mele. He formally debuted in the top category with the great Carpano team with zebra-striped jerseys like Juventus, managed by general manager Vincenzo Giacotto and d.s. Ettore Milano. The following year and until 1964 he raced for Gazzola, a team from a pasta factory in Mondovì with the great Luxembourg climber Charly Gaul who had among his sporting directors also Ferdi Kubler and Luciano Parodi, with also a good brood of youngsters, at least then, among whom Franco Cribiori and Marino Vigna.
It was in 1962 that Mele achieved his only success among professionals,winning the Bellinzona-Vaduz stage in the Tour of Switzerland. Also noteworthy is his second place in the final stage of the 1964 Giro beaten at the Vigorelli by the German Willi Altig.
