This paper is a reflection on one of the aspects of the construction of Italian ethnicity in the city of São Paulo. Or, the participation of an Italian ethnic association in this process, involving a strategy of social recognition and changing the image of Italian immigrants in São Paulo. Palestra Itália, by playing football, a sport that would become the great national passion, is a unique association in the city's Italian associations. This association was marked by deep regional divisions, with the rule being the representation of immigrants with the regional cut of the Italian peninsula. Until the foundation and structuring of the club, what we saw in the city was, therefore, a great profusion of entities, groups and associations that brought together Lombards, Venetians, Calabrians, Piedmontese, but never Italians. Entities with the most diverse objectives: mutual, literary, recreational, sports, welfare, among others.
This paper aims to reconstruct the history of Palestra Italia in order to observe its performance and relationship with São Paulo society. The period studied covers, in general terms, the first half of the 20th century; the research carried out begins in 1914, when the football team was founded, and extends until 1942, the year in which the association entered into conflict with the society of São Paulo, forcing it to change its name to Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras.
