Mercier Cycles, a look back at a fantastic Saint-Étienne success story from the last century with our guest, Bernard Chaussinand, author of the book "Mercier, Cycle et cyclisme, un cocktail succès" (Mercier, Cycle and Cycling, a Successful Cocktail)
The history of Mercier Cycles begins with a meeting between Emile Mercier and Jean Benoit Ribaud in 1921. They joined forces to create the general partnership Ribaud et Mercier, of which Emile Mercier was the manager. The head office was then located at 46 rue du Vernay in Saint-Étienne.
They began manufacturing bottom bracket axles and cups, as well as frames.
In 1924, Emile Mercier bought out his partners' shares and switched to frame manufacturing, then bicycle assembly around 1930.
The brand formed a professional cycling team in 1933. Mercier bicycles experienced what could be described as a "golden age" for the company, the post-war period, thanks in particular to the countless successes of their champions, led by Raymond Poulidor.
