In the early morning of June 7, 1989, pilot Will Rogers of the SLM plane Anthony Nesty made a fatal landing. The plane, named after Suriname's first Olympic gold medalist, was en route to Zanderij Airport in Paramaribo. The aircraft crashed in the Surinamese jungle, less than two kilometers from its final destination. Also on board were the players of the Kleurrijk Elftal (Colorful Team). These footballers of Surinamese descent were influential figures in Dutch football at the time. On June 7, they were en route to Paramaribo to play a tournament in their native country. Of the eighteen players on the team, fourteen perished. Three survived the disaster, and one player was traveling ahead of his team.
