He finished third in a poll by Yediot Aharonot to choose the greatest Israeli footballers. He made a name for himself as the leader of Hapoel Petah Tikva. Stelmach received offers to sign in Arsenal and Fenerbahçe but declined due to his loyalty to the club.
In 2005, he was voted the 71st-greatest Israeli of all time, in a poll by the Israeli news website Ynet to determine whom the general public considered the 200 Greatest Israelis.
